Dave Anderson-'Ray Wilson'

'Ray Wilson' was photographed by Dave Anderson and is a part of his exhibit titled 'Rough Beauty.' This photograph was taken in a poor, rural, Ku Klux Klan town located in Southeast Texas known as Vidor. Many people consider this town appauling and incredibly racist, but Anderson somehow found beauty in it. Anderson was raised as a Quaker and taught that God is to be found everywhere and in every person. Through his photographs, he is able to communicate this very thought to others across the entire world.
The black and white image of this man titled ‘Ray Wilson,’ was taken in a small, narrow, and somewhat crowded room. Ray Wilson is an older looking Caucasian man, maybe in his 50’s or 60’s, who is sitting at a desk. He is drinking Miller High Life and smoking Marlboro Reds. The cigarette smoke rising and floating throughout the air creates a type of movement in the photograph. Ray is a little left of the center; to the left of him, a poster of Marilyn Monroe, and to the right, a window, balance him out. The beer, the cigarettes, and the poster of a sex symbol, all form a type of unity. It seems as if Ray Wilson is resisting change, as if he were still a teenager who has just discovered the thrills of drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes, and having sex.
