I think that one of the most magnificent works of all time is The Lord of The Rings. This book is a very compelling piece because you could be reading one of the books in the trilogy, or you could be reading The Hobbit and could suddenly find that you have read 200 pages or more and that half the night is gone. There is also the fact that you will find humor in the trilogy or The Hobbit at exactly the right moment in the story.
What works about the The Lord of The Rings is that it has a very deep and compelling background history to it. It is innovative because before J.R.R. Tolkien created The Lord of The Rings he was writing a bunch of stories, which he started in high school, that became the well known background history for The Lord of The Rings. These stories were later published in their own right by Christopher Tolkien as The History of Middle Earth and The Silmarillion.
The Lord of The Rings will stand the test of time because it already has stood it. The Lord of The Rings was copyrighted in 1936 and it has been around for seventy years. A few years ago they created movies from the trilogy; the movies were very popular, which shows that the trilogy still has life and will continue on. I think that people will continue to tell their children about The Lord of The Rings well into the future.
