Kids Who Get Life

“When Kids get life” is a report about people who get sentenced to life in prison without parole when they are of juvenile age. The report spoke of many stories that seemed like a 40 years sentence would be a long sentence. All of the convicted were in some way linked to a murder in the first degree, but many of them were hardly murderers and the others were kids with unusual and damaging family lives. In the cases the court seemed to over look the fact that they were kids and although murder is not allowable, kids make mistakes and that the teen years are the most unstable and treacherous years of a persons life. For the kids that were the murders and in the most violent and vicious ways, no one took into account their back-stories and their family lives. The “murderous” kids had all murdered their family members, which I would personally immediately think, “hm… what caused this and how did they treat them.” The others were pretty much just wrong place wrong time. One of the convicted was really only linked to the crime because he had come over to see his friend and his friend happened to kill his mom as he was walking into the house. Now why should he have to serve a life sentence if he really didn’t do a single thing? At the same time, you have to link about the families of the lost loved ones and think about what does justice to their child’s death? I agree that no matter your age you need to serve time for a murder, a life sentence for something that happened when you have the least stable brain. There was one thing that was said that I thought was the most interesting thing of the whole report. As far as murders go, the ones who serve the least amount of time are the parents who kill their kids, while the ones who serve the most time are the kids who kill their parents. I just thought that was quite backwards, especially because kids are stupid and have a ton less life experience.
